In case you hadn’t heard, May is Short Story Month! As a writer of such stories, this got me pretty excited. How should I celebrate??
My excitement, however, was immediately followed by the crushing realization that I have almost zero free time these days. Would I love to write a short story this month? YES! Do I have the time? Not even slightly.
Then I came up with a pretty genius idea (if I do say so myself): I could ask all my amazing, smart, and talented friends for help!
If you’ve ever taken a drama class, you’ll remember that game where you sit in a circle and make up a story. Each person contributes one sentence, and once you’ve gone around the circle the story is complete. Well, I want to play that game with you on Twitter.
Most of us might not have the time to sit and crank out a whole story on our own, but we all have time for a tweet, right? So in celebration of Short Story Month, let’s write a short story together! It’ll be super fun, promise.
Here’s how it all goes down:
One week from today (May 14th), I—your fearful leader—will start us off at approximately 10am PST. Using the hashtag #twitshortfic, I will provide the first sentence of the story and tag the next person.
But tagging people and using a hashtag will take up precious story characters!!
I’m aware. Unfortunately, we’re all going to have to get creative, because otherwise this little experiment will soon descend into CHAOS!
When you are tagged, contribute your sentence and tag another person. Don’t forget the hashtag though, otherwise your contribution will have been for naught and the game might end with you. And that would be sad. If you get tagged again, you get to contribute TWO sentences, you lucky dog you!
At the end of the day (around 9pm PST), I will gather all the entries to the best of my ability and assemble them into one hopefully coherent document. Our collective masterpiece will then be published to my blog for all to see and admire!
I don’t know if you could tell, but I’m pretty psyched about this idea. I really hope that many, many people join in! With that said, tell all your friends about this so we can get as many writers as we can! Share this post on Facebook, Twitter (of course), and any other social sites you might be on.
Happy Short Story Month, everybody!
VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!
I’ve decided to nix the tag the next person rule. I know it might mean chaos, but I would prefer a little chaos to major exclusion. So here are the new rules:
We’re all going to number our sentences to try and simulate some sort of order. SO! Before contributing your sentence, search the hashtag (#twitshortfic) and find the most recent entry. Number your sentence and DON’T FORGET THE HASHTAG!
That is all. See you Tuesday!
